I went to the Project Based Learning Conference in Napa this summer. During this three-day conference, I learned about the essential elements needed in planning and implementing a “Gold Standard” Project. During the conference, I developed a project based on our Social Studies’ standards on government. First grade has 3 standards that aligned well with the project, so I divided the project into 3 parts. Each part focused on answering a critical piece of the project. Part 1 focused on students researching and presenting on physical, social, and emotional needs. Part 2 focused on understanding rights, rules, and responsibilities of citizens, and Part 3 of the project focused on students learning how rules are made and changed. This project gave students a better understanding of why we have laws and rules, as well as their responsibilities as citizens of our school and community. You can see a complete overview of this project below—what we did, what went well, and what I would like to change next time.
