Flexible Learning Spaces was a session offered during our Summer Institute. I attended this session with my 5th grade team where we decided that this could be something we could incorporate in our classrooms. We were able to obtain buckets at no cost to make individual stools for students to sit on during work time with a partner or individually at smaller tables. I created a standing table using bed risers for students who do better “out of their seat.” This allows movement for students who struggle to sit in their seat and work. This table is always occupied! Another area created was a reading area using two desks without legs and a bed pillow. Students love to sit and work or read in this relaxed comfortable spot. This is also the situation with the “beach” chairs. They are low to the ground and allow students to sit comfortably on the floor to work or read. The hexagonal table in the center of the room allows space for cooperative learning to take place.
