What Great Educators Do Differently - Conference Reflection
By: Emily Akers, Elkhorn Elementary
During the conference, I attended a session focusing on reading engagement. The speaker discussed the importance of allowing students to choose their own reading material. Choice can also be provided in the reading environment by way of setting, timeline and assessments.
Since attending this workshop, I have applied choice to both my lesson planning and daily routines. Students are encouraged to choose books for independent reading that they are interested in, rather than focusing on a reading comprehension score. I have transitioned my room to have a variety of flexible seating options and provided a variety of resources for my students when it comes to sharing their learning. Examples include reading notebooks, apps such as Seesaw and iBrainstorm, and artwork.
This is a resource build by the ESSD40 staff for to aid in transforming teaching and learning.
